As the United States entered 1984, we had much reason to celebrate being Americans. The economy, after a very painful recession just two years earlier was starting to see a recovery, but not for everyone. With the help of Senator Bob Dole and others, there was a commission formed to save Social Security for decades to come. But despite labor not feeling the effects as well as management, there was still that sense of American optimism that no matter what, we could do anything. Having the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 helped make some of the difference.
When it came to foreign policy, despite setback in of the marines killed in those barracks bombing in Beirut in 1983, Ronald Reagan was showing the Soviet Inion just who was best positioned to win the Cold War in its final years.
But 1984 was an election year and President Reagan was up for re-election. He would go on national television and radio and declare his candidacy for re-election touting his record at home and around the world. But, like every contest that needed to be a challenger and the Democrats had eight. We would see the first American to orbit the Earth, Senator John Glenn of Ohio, the failed 1972 Democratic Nominee, Former Senator George McGovern of South Dakota, Former Vice President Walter Mondale of Minnesota, and Reverend Jesse Jackson of Illinois and Senator Gary Hart of Colorado; just to name a few standouts.
By the end of Primary Season, the Democratic Party had chosen Former Vice President Mondale as their Nominee. To look progressive, Mondale decided to choose a woman as his running-mate; Representative Geraldine Ferraro of New York.
The debates seemed disastrous for President Reagan as he seemed ill prepared and too old to handle the job. But in the second debate he made a quick turnaround when asked about his age. Reagan stated that he would not make age an issue in this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience. That line generated so much laughter that even Vice President Mondale found the line funny. The Vice Presidential Debate however, seemed like Representative Ferraro felt that Vice President Bush was patronizing her because she was in fact a woman.
There really was no contest as Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush were destined to be re-elected. Just like in the Presidential Election of 1972, the Reagan/Bush ticket defeated the Mondale/Ferraro ticket winning forty-nine states to Mondale's Minnesota and the District of Columbia.
The 1984 Election and the four years after would lay the groundwork for Gary Hart as a strong second place contender and Jesse Jackson to come back in the Presidential Election of 1988 to go up against what seemed to be the heir apparent for the Republican Party; Vice President George HW Bush. But would it be so easy for any of these men?
