This is a great quick resource to some major events from 1941-2001. I have the events highlighted in a deeper dive of collections dedicated to each event. If OTRCat does a Cuban Missile Crisis that’d be great.

I live in NE Ohio and actually went to Kent State, but in the mid-late 1990s. I do, however know someone who was a student at Kent State on May 4, 1970. She was from Youngstown, now lives in Kent. This person was visually impaired and could not drive. She became friends with another Kent State student from Youngstown named Sandy Scheuer. On the day of the fateful rally at Kent State Karen ran into Sandy and tried to talk her into going to the rally on the Commons with her. Sandy told Karen that while she was against the war she needed to go and proof read her paper for class. They agreed to have dinner together later that evening and exchanged their good byes. Karen walked towards the Commons for the rally, Sandy was headed for class by way of the Prentice Hall (girls dorm my sister stayed in back in the 1990s). Sandy Scheuer who was studying to be a speech therapist to help stroke victims learn to talk again was ironically shot in the throat by an M1 rifle that the Ohio National Guard shot into the crowd of students. She was dead within five minutes. I heard wounded student, Alan Canfora (deceased since December 20, 2020) say how the riots on May 1, 1970 in Downtown Kent started. There was debate for over 40 years if the beer bottle thrown at the Kent City police car was a Rolling Rock or a Strohs beer bottle. It was a Strohs. If you and your wife ever get to Kent, Ohio, you will have to check out the May 4 Visitors Center on campus, or better yet, take the walking tour of May 4, 1970.
