Why would anyone want to listen to a story that they know is going to scare them to the point of discomfort? The simplest explanation is that scaring yourself to the point of nearly wetting your pants can be a lot of fun! 

Mystery and horror stories are a part of the "Speculative Fiction" type. Better known for Science Fiction and Fantasy, Speculative Fiction allows the writer to ask "What if?" and then answer his own question.

Storytellers have been doing their best to frighten their audiences for as long as they have been telling stories. Tales of monsters, demons, ghosts, witches, vampires, and other things that go "Bump!" in the night were probably first told to convince the listener to rely on the protection afforded by the teller, the group, or the central religious beliefs.

In time, the message of protection became less important than the thrill of the fright. People began to realize that the bumps in the night were not something to be frightened of, but the fright itself was something to be cherished. The small adrenaline boost of a good scare helps you to feel more alive.
