Drama (1946 - 49)
Favorite Story brought a specific genre classic literature to
the radio. Mainly 19 th century classics such as Alice in
Wonderland, Wuthering Heights, Dr. Heidegger’s
Experiment, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein,
and many others seem to represent the creators’ interest
in classics with the argumention of ethics and a distrust of scientific
progress. Postwar and Cold War America was looking for an outlet
in understanding general fear of new scientific inventions and
development.
One channel was the rise in popularity of science
fiction, however the use of classical 19th century literature
was yet another way to understand the changes within the world
in the late 1940s. Favorite Story began its broadcast
on KFI Los Angeles and is also an example of a local syndicated
old time radio show that made the leap to nationally broadcast. It’s quality
and use of timeless stories, lead to its rebroadcast for years
to come.
