The melodious strains of the studio organ begin to swell, the narrator snatches your attention with promises of romance, possible heartbreak, and a 'perfect love,’ and you know that it is time to start weeping into your sink full of soapy dishes. Or, in this case, the bowl full of Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese you are about to whip into a delicious and healthy snack for your family.
Marriage for Two is a 1949 NBC Radio Soap starring Teri Keane and Staats Cotsworth as Vikki and Roger Hoyt. Winifred Wolfe wrote the stories, Jon Gart provided the music, and the whole thing was brought to the air by the good folks at Kraft Foods.
The Hoyt's live in the rambling Marshall House on Mountain Ave in Glenwood, and Roger rides the train into New York City, where he works as an up-and-coming executive. The Hoyt's do not consider themselves to be wealthy, but Roger can afford to hire servants to help Vikki keep the house. Vikki's father runs the local drug store, which is a social (and rumor) hub of Glenwood. Roger and Vikki have been sweethearts for years, but before there was Vikki, there was glamorous Pam Towers. Vikki knows that Roger is all hers, but even now, Pam has an annoying habit of finding ways to get close to Roger.
Several critics have stated that Staats Cosworth Jr was "the busiest actor in radio.” In the space of a dozen years, he performed in 7,500 broadcasts. His regular programs include Amanda of Honeymoon Hill, Big Sister, Pepper Young's Family, When a Girl Marries, and several more. He is best remembered for portraying Casey, Crime Photographer.
Manhattan native Teri Keane attended the Professional Children's School, a prep school established for showbiz kids working in vaudeville and the New York Theater community who would not have an opportunity to attend regular classes. She also brought an impressive soap opera resume to Marriage with parts in Big Sister, Life Can Be Beautiful, The Romance of Helen Trent, and others.
Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese has nothing to do with the City of Brotherly Love. According to a report published in The Philadelphia Inquirer in June 2019, that form of soft cheese was invented in 1872 by a New York dairyman as a new way to bring milk and cream to market in the form of soft cheese. When the Kraft Cheese Company began producing the style in 1880, the Philly moniker was selected to link the product with the high-quality dairy product for which the Philadelphia region was becoming known.
