Everyone experiences sadness from time to time, but when there is no escaping the feeling it may be a case of depression. Depression is a severe medical condition which can affect a person's daily activities to the point that they are unable to function in normal life. Modern psychiatry has looked at the causes and effects of depression, and there has been significant progress in treating the condition. However, for the victim caught in the grips of depression, all there can be is the need to face another day of impenetrable sadness.
Many people are depressed around Christmas, but it hits Archie hard when Duffy stiffs him for a Christmas bonus. A stranger comes into the tavern and takes Archie for a walk around the neighborhood where they see several Christmas miracles. Nothing cures the blues like a Christmas miracle.
Sometimes it is hard to accept that life doesn't go the way you expected, especially when you have a talent that no one seems to appreciate. A cartoonist thought his drawings were his ticket to success, but he winds up supporting his family drawing blueprints in an airplane factory. Depressed, he walks out on his wife and son. That very night, a call comes to the house from a major syndicate. It is his lucky break, but the only way he can take advantage of it is if the Salvation Army can find him on Heartbeat Theater.
Liz on My Favorite Husbanddiscovers that she can't tell a joke, no one wants to be her bridge partner, and can't even cook a decent breakfast. Her inferiority complex gets so bad that Alan Reed as a psychiatrist can't even snap her out for her depression. The only thing that helps is the support of the rest of the gang.
Robert Montgomery on Silver Theater plays a merciless swindler who has cheated his investors before. He knows that if he can prove that he is a manic depressive, he can get off without a conviction. He has made himself an expert on criminal psychiatry, so his is an "Expert Opinion".
On Theater Five, Fred Miller is understandably depressed because his wife must work to support them both. He lost his sight working the high steel, so he feels he is less than a man. When a robber shoots the widow upstairs, he gets a chance to prove himself in "A Matter of Pride".
I think what you do in not only keeping Old Time Radio alive and helping those of us who lived through era relive the memories, but also introducing it to younger folks who were not alive during the golden era of radio experience it is great. It is amazing that most of it has stood the test of time for over three quarters of a century.
I have recommended it to many friends and colleagues and my kids. I volunteer taking phone calls at a local distress center and we have found humor helps depression so I have told many callers about the site.
It is great that you are a small business and not an impersonal conglomerate. Keep up the good work!
