Van Dine's character, Philo Vance to be a rather foppish joke. Like any other soft-hearted gumshoe of the era, Vance always nabbed the bad guy and by the time he made his radio debut n this date, July 5, 1945, his toughness standards had improved considerably, although he was far and away the most polite shamus on the air.
