Gunsmoke

60 Years Ago today in Radio History: Gunsmoke aired for the final time on the radio. From the time that the audition episode was recorded, everyone from the Network head on down knew that CBS had a major hit with the gritty reality of Gunsmoke. The one problem that the network wanted, as soon as possible, to carry that success to the highly profitable world of Television. Creators Macdonnell and Meston knew that their show was perfect for the Radio and feared that pictures would cheapen the entire concept. The executives won in the end, and with twenty seasons on TV, they were probably right. The radio show provided several stories to TV, and both mediums carried Gunsmoke from 1955 until final radio broadcast on June 18, 1961.

Phil Harris and Alice Faye

67 Years Ago today in Radio History: Phil Harris and Alice Faye aired for the final time on the radio. Like his boss on The Jack Benny Program, Phil Harris put together a strong ensemble cast and was not afraid to let the other players get the laughs on The Phil Harris/Alice Faye Show. Along with Phil and Alice, there were the Harris Daughters played by Jeanine Roos and Anne Whitfield, Remley the left-handed guitar player played by Elliot Lewis, Walter Tetley as Julius Abruzzio, and Gale Gordon as the Sponsor. The biggest hitch came when Benny moved his show to CBS in 1949 but kept the same timeslot. This meant that Phil had to leave during the first half of Jack's show, walk across the CBS and NBC studio parking lots, and knock on the backdoor of NBC to be in time for his show. The program's last broadcast was on this day in 1954.

Adventures of Ellery Queen

82 Years Ago today in Radio History: Adventures of Ellery Queen debuted on the radio today in 1939. The Adventures of Ellery Queen were mystery stories about a mystery writer. This gave the titular character a unique outlook on crime and criminals. A mystery writer is the ultimate in armchair detectives, so the show, which debuted on this day in 1939, employed the gimmick of introducing a panel of armchair sleuths at the beginning of the broadcast. The mystery would unfold as it does on any other crime show, but just before the perpetrator is revealed, the action stops to allow the panel to introduce their solutions to the mystery. Then, Ellery comes back on the air to tell us Whodunit.
