80 Years Ago today in Radio History: Chesterfield Supper Club debuted on the radio today in 1944.
Not so very long ago, the perfect day was one which ended with a meat-and-potatoes supper followed by a chance to relax in your favorite chair while listening to some popular music, followed by lighting more and more cigarettes. The Liggett& Myers Tobacco Company was hoping that many smokers would choose Chesterfield Cigarettes. Chesterfields were the first brand to be packaged with a moisture-proof seal outside of the paper and foil wrapping. The Chesterfield Supper Club musical variety program starring Perry Como and Jo Stafford aired for the first time on this date in 1944. Today only: this collection is 10% off.

Chesterfield Supper Club is a splendid music and variety show, sponsored by Chesterfield Cigarettes. The theme music to the show was appropriately chosen, Smoke Rings no doubt to inspire an after dinner cigarette.
The show began as a 15 minute radio show on weekday evenings. Perry Como hosted the show on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Jo Stafford was the host on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but later Peggy Lee hosted on Thursdays.
The Chesterfield Supper Club featured Perry Como and Jo Stafford and the theme was Smoke Dreams......while a Chesterfield burns...There is a video of this song by Stafford with a picture of Anne Francis (Honey West) holding a cirgarette. Back then, people usually smoked cigarettes after making love...so there was more of a romantic thing about it.
The Chesterfield supper club really showed the great entertainers of the past. How lucky we were to hear them and how lucky we are to hear them again thanks to OTR!
