Barry Gray is the father of talk radio known for his candid interviews with the shiniest stars of the day. Known as the DJ you love to hate, Gray wasn't afraid to be opinionated and aggressive on the air which got him into trouble.
Barry Gray was a DJ for WMCA in New York when popular bandleader Woody Herman called in and Gray put the phone up to the microphone to broadcast their conversation. It was a hit with audiences and producers alike. In the 1950s, Barry Gray was the top talk radio performer even though his time slot was the late night midnight to 3AM.
Barry Gray wasn't afraid of controversial topics in the 1950s including nudity, criticizing the McCarthyism, and race politics. Gray's criticism of the anti-communism movement and the Red Scare lead Walter Winchell to nickname him "the disk jerk."
These are very rare recording from 1949 and include interviews with Al Jolson, Milton Berle, and Canada Lee among others.
