The use of racial stereotypes in songs has a long history in popular American music. Beginning in minstrel entertainment through the early 20th century, there are a number of top hits with racial stereotypes with such titles as "All Coons Look Alike to Me", "Old Black Joe", and "Pickaninny Paradise." Although these titles make one shudder today, they were commonplace just a century ago.
Other races and nationalities beside African Americans were used in racist music including Germans, Chinese, Dutch, Native Americans, and Irish. This music is a significant part of American music history and includes records from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
