Campbell Playhouse stars Orson Welles and his wondorous Mercury Theater troupe. After Campbell's sponsored show Hollywood Hotel ended in 1938, the soup makers searched for a new show to snap up.

After hearing Orson's 1938 Halloween special, War of the Worlds, the popular fellow was hired. Orson directs and acts in the show among fellow performers Agnes Moorehead, Ray Collins, George Coulouris, Frank Readick, Georgia Backus, Bea Benaderet, Everett Sloane, and Edgar Barrier, to name a few. According to Orson, Campbell Playhouse has "all kinds of stories, mostly modern, and all of them chosen for their suitability to this medium."
It includes such greats as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Magnificent Ambersons. Annually, Campbell Playhouse broadcast A Christmas Carol, starring Lionel Barrymore. Each year they recorded a different program of the old beloved Christmas favorite. June Moon is another favorite show of Campbell Playhouse lovers, starring funnyman Jack Benny.
