The Story Behind the Headlines

Hosted by Cesar Saerchinger and created as joint venture between NBC and the American Historical Association cover "outstanding news events and major trends in world affairs"

NBC along with the American Historical Association, created Story Behind the Headlines a show that took important stories of the time and discussed the history behind the story. The show was on the air in the 1930s and the 1940s and covered much of the history behind stories related to the war as well as tackling many stories closer to home after the war. The host was Cesar Saerchinger who was a respected newsman.

In one of the early shows, titled "Appeasement Marches On" from February 1938, the big story was about Chamberlain's Britain recognizing the Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco. Serachinger goes deep into the history of Europe and the alliances, broken alliances, and realliances that brought the Continent to that point in 1938.

The airdates of most of the episodes included in this collection of Story Behind the Headlines take place before, during, and after WWII.

Story Behind the Headlines is an excellent old time radio show for historians interested in a deeper look into historical events that shaped our nation.
