Steve Cochran
(1917 – 1965)

Actor Steve Cochran brought the same brooding intensity from films like White Heat to the golden age of radio. This collection highlights the tough-guy icon's rare but impactful audio performances, offering fans of classic Hollywood a deeper look at his dramatic range.
A major highlight is his work on The Unexpected, a 15-minute syndicated mystery program known for sharp twist endings. Cochran’s gritty delivery anchored tense episodes like "Easy Money" and "Jailbreak."
In Proudly We Hail, a syndicated Army recruitment program, Cochran stepped away from his typical mobster roles to star in half-hour heroic dramas. These patriotic broadcasts showcased his ability to lead straightforward, compelling narratives for a national audience.
Cochran also starred in the prestige program Screen Directors Playhouse. In the April 19, 1951 broadcast of "Humoresque," he played a talented, struggling violinist alongside the legendary Tallulah Bankhead, proving his ability to hold his own against formidable leading ladies.
Cochran’s off-screen life was as dramatic as his roles, ending tragically on June 15, 1965, at the age of 48. He died of an acute lung infection aboard his yacht, the Rogue, off the coast of Guatemala. He had hired an inexperienced, young all-female crew who did not know how to operate the vessel. Consequently, the boat drifted aimlessly for ten days with his remains on board before being discovered and rescued. These broadcasts stand as a lasting tribute to a versatile, hard-living actor whose prime was cut short.
