It Pays to Be Married "honors the American Home" with true stories of married life from average American couples. Guests tell of their married troubles and seek advice. Hosted by Jay Stewart, who interviews the couples about their married life and then prepares them for the quiz.
Mrs. Frank complains that Mr. Frank won't change out of his pajama between Friday evening and Monday morning, even in front of company! Mrs. Frank adds, "he doesn't like to shave either", much to the hilarity of the audience. The couple has a chance to win hosiery, socks, nylon pajamas (ha,ha), and $250 in cash. One wife participant squeals when she learns that they have a chance to win a coffee percolator.
Mr. and Mrs. Pearson of London tell of married life in England during the war and the cultural shock when moving to America. When they were first married, Mr. Pearson could not understand Mrs. Pearson's strong Irish accent.
Phil Harris and Alice Faye guest star in one episode. Phil Harris coos about their daughters, "They are not only the most talented kids that you have seen but they are the most beautiful that you will ever see…they look exactly like me." Phil tells the story of the birth of their first child, where he witnessed the birth (it was very rare for husbands to attend births during this era).
