Dan SeymourWe The People is a human interest collection of not so simple stories from simple people and not so simple people.  The show featured real people telling an unusual and extraordinary true story in their own words, later the stories were dramatized.  Time Magazine called We The People "anybody's and everybody's soap box."

Some We The People stories including in this collection:

  • Dunninger the Mentalist tells the true ghost story of a dead man's guitar that mysteriously strummed every night.
  • A heartwarming story of a small time crook doing time in prison who finds a pen-pal on the outside.  When he's released he travels to her home to surprise her only to be surprised himself by what he found.
  • A poor newsboy who always wanted a dog, finds one he named Rusty who helps him run his route.  He tells the story on how he lost he's dog to a reckless automobile drive.

Sanka CoffeeWe The People was sponsored by Sanka coffee and later Post Grape Nuts, and Gulf Oil. The show began as a skit on the Rudy Vallee Show and soon became it's own show so popular it rivaled Ripley's Believe it or Not for extraordinary stories.

At times guests who were mostly amateurs had trouble reading their stories due to stage fright.  To prevent fraudulent stories from broadcasting, the production came up with an extensive test system to prove stories to be true.

We The People is an entertaining old time radio show featuring human interest stories from the 1930s and 1940s.

I was elated to find a few listings of yours that supplemented my existing collection. I thought you might have somehow found more musical programs, for example, which is the reason I ordered the Kate Smith and Belll Telelphone Hour disks. I am interested if you might have somewhere programs by Cities Service Band of America. I have only located two or three.

I was told in my family that my grandparents, Jerome and Dorothy Ulven appeared on We the People Program that was done with Phillips Lord. They won a trip to Radio City to tell the story of the Dale town bachelors and how getting married broke that cycle. I think it was in 1936.

We the People was a little old fashioned, but provides a interesting window to the past. Enjoyed the disk very much.

On Sept 10, 1940 my grandmother was interviewed in New York on the CBS radio program We, the People. (She survived being held hostage for two days by escaped convicts) Many decades ago my family had a copy of the recording but sadly has since been lost. No one has heard the interview she did in over 50 years. It was incredible to be able to find the audio of this episode online. Just to let you know, no one in our family has been able to hear this interview since 1940!! This is pretty amazing to find. Thank you so much for what you do!!

I am looking for a recording of W.C. Bailey of Underhill Vermont, who was on the We The People radio show sometime in the mid to late 1930's. His claim to fame was that he took up riding the bicycle at the age of 79, and made two trips from Vermont to Chicago and back.

Do you have or know someone who has a recording of Clifford Johnson on We The People. It would have been sometime after 1943. He was a Coast Guard man on leave the night of the Cocoanut Grove Fire in Boston in 1942. He was a hero that night who suffered severe burns, but recovered after a year in the hospital. He was on a Sunday Evening Broadcast of that show, but I'm not sure if it was the radio or TV show. Pretty sure it was the radio show.

My great great grandfather, interview on Or around August 16, 1940 in New York on We The People to discuss his role in the Civil War as a Black Man. It would be unbelievable to hear his story. He lived in Hugo Oklahoma at the time.
