Wax Cylinders from 1900-1904

Wax CylindersArthur CollinsWax Cylinders Volume 2 includes wax cylinder recordings from 1900-1904.  During this time Wax Cylinders sales and popularity were at an all time high and there were many popular recording artists. 

Included in this recording are popular music stars such as

  • Arthur Collins (1864-1933) –American Tenor who recorded one of the first songs with the term jazz (spelled jas) in the title. Arthur Collins was known for his Dixieland music.
  • Billy Murray (1877-1954) – Popular America vaudevillian singer and recording artist who recorded music on every label of his day.
  • Harry MacDonough (1871-1931) – Canadian tenor who got his start making phonograph cylinders for penny arcades.
  • The Dinwiddie Colored Quartet (founded in 1898) – The members of this African-American quartet, met at an industrial school in Virginia.  It is believed that this is the first recording of an African-American vocal group.
  • Dan W. Quinn (1859-1938) – Best known for the song Tin Pan Alley, Dan W. Quinn was a successful recording artist who recorded thousands of titles.
  • Byron G Harlan (1861-1936) – Mistrel singer from Kansas, Byron G Harlan performed solo and in a popular duo group "Collins & Harlan."
  • John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) – Nicknamed The March King, John Philip Sousa composed patriotic music at the turn of the 19th century.
  • Len Spencer (1867-1914) – Best know for his recording The Arkansas Traveler a ballad about a fiddler in Arkansas.
