"A Tale of Two Cities" is a historical novel published in 1859 and written by Charles Dickens.  The opening "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." is one of the most memorable in English Literature.  The two main characters Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton live in Paris and London respectively.  It is a story about class division, redemption and takes place during and after the French Revolution. 

"Little Women" is a novel published in 1868 and written by American author Louisa May Alcott.  The classic American novel follows the March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, as they grow-up during and after the Civil War.  

"Moby-Dick" is an 1851 novel by Herman Melville.  Unlike the novel, the story is told in 3rd person so there is no opening with "Call me Ishmael" but rather "His name was Ishmael."  Follow Capitain Ahab sail the seas for the fabled white whale, Moby Dick.  The story is forever ingrained in American popular culture and is read by 9th grade students everywhere.
