Walking down the broad walkways that flank Main Street,
you just cannot help but look around and feel overwhelmed
by the overall peacefulness that permeates through the
boulevards and the avenues. Maybe you might pass by the
"Pantry," the town tea room where Toni McCafferty,
the Mayor's Secretary, takes her lunch everyday. You might
want to take in a play at the Bijou Theater, where every
Christmas the Mayor takes time out of his busy schedule
in order to play Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens'
A Christmas Carol.

The Mayor, played by Lionel Barrymore, who is the Granduncle
of actress Drew Barrymore, is the type of mayor who had
a vicious bark but a very mushy heart when confronted
with the plight of a stray dog or an orphan. His housekeeper,
"Marilly," played by the "Lavender Lady"
Agnes Moorehead (famous for her performances in Suspense
among many other radio appearances), was the nurturing
element of the Mayor's life. But the real joy came when
Butch arrived in the Mayor's life. Butch, whose real name
is Roscoe Turner, had come to live with the mayor (after
the first season) when his mother died and his father
went to fight with the Seabees.

the Mayor shared with Butch. They were often seen fishing
and swimming together at Rock Creek. Marilly would usually,
internally, complain about the Mayor's tardiness with
his political work, but she knew how much he enjoyed spending
time with Butch. She knew that Butch was like the son
that the Mayor never had.
So, come on by, in between First and Spring Street, and
you will be swept away by the sheer beauty and comfort
of this town. The Mayor of the Town is already
expecting you!
