Doris Day
Few stars have had the popularity enjoyed by Doris Day. She has always held her place in the spotlight with grace and dignity, never appearing to work very hard at it, but remaining incredibly beautiful the whole time. She never appeared to be pushing an image, but she had one as the beautiful, if somewhat untouchable, Girl Next Door.

Doris DayDoris initially got the performance bug through dancing, and appeared around her home town of Cincinnati with a partner, until an automobile accident cut her dance career short. While recovering she began closely listening to singers on the radio.. Her mother recognized her talent, and arranged for singing lessons. The teacher was impressed enough to arrange for three lessons a week for the price of one.

After two yearsn and at the age of 16, she was singing with Les Brown and his Ochestra. She married her first husband and had a son, Terry, named after her favorite comic book character as a child Terry and the Pirates.

Doris's first hit was "Sentimental Journey", which became an anthem for GI's returning from WWII. She would have a 50 year association with Columbia Records, her only label.

Her singing, along with her good looks, brought her to Hollywood's attention. She appeared in 39 films, and demonstrated an ability to deliver performances in comedy, romance, and heavy drama.

In 1952, Doris Day was given a half hour musical show highlighting her vocal talents. She brought with her the friends and co-workers that she made while becoming a star. In every episode, she reminded listeners of troops serving abroad in Korea and else where around the world.

The Doris Day Show only lasted one year due to a complex scheme to promote a possible CBS-Columbia television sets. When the deal ran dry, The Doris Day Show was pulled. Other potential radio shows did not make it on air as Doris Day chose instead to focus on her film career.

For additional recordings, see her guest appearances in the Doris Day Collection volume 1.

I received disc 5 of The Doris Day Show. I had never heard the show before. She has a smooth easy voice and the guests were good-Kirk Douglas and Jack Kirkwood. The announcer was Jack Benny's announcer, Don Wilson. Also, you can't go wrong with Doris singing "Here Comes Santa Claus".
