The White Rabbit Bus hit America's highways every Sunday morning, with its conductor (that's what they called him) Milton Cross. It positively rolicked with hymns and poetry and children's songs--wholesome entertainment for kids.
It would be hard not to feel like you're part of the gang, comfortable in a cushy seat, surrounded by warmth and good will. Maybe you'll get a chance to sing the next number!
You're in good hands on this WJZ (NBC, Blue Network) program. Your conductor isn't just some guy with nothing to do on a Sunday morn, but the voice of the Metropolitan Opera.
You might not know it now, bopping down the road in this raucous jalopy, but your fellow kids are a veritable who's who of future stars.
There's Ann Blyth, who in a few short years will play Joan Crawford's daughter in Mildred Pierce; Walter Tetley, the adorable chubby lad who'll later play roles on The Great Gildersleeve and finally play the voice of "Sherman" in the "Mr. Peabody" cartoons; and Jackie Kelk, who'll do just about everything. Kelk will go on to play Jimmy Olsen for seven years on The Adventures of Superman, and even join the cast of TV's Leave It to Beaver.
When we stop to pick up our next passenger, who knows who it will be? All we know is he or she will be ready with a song.
Buckle up and listen to this wonderful trip down memory highway: Coast to Coast on a Bus!
